Everything you ever wanted to know about hemp.

WHAT IS CBD AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

That's a great question — and one many people are asking these days. First off, CBD is the acronym used for cannabidiol, a chemical found in the Cannabis sativa plant (marijuana or hemp). It's non-psychoactive — unlike THC — meaning it won't get you high. Hemp is a type of cannabis grown specifically with a higher level of CBD and very low level of THC. We like to say Healthy not high!

What Is CBD?
Cannabinoids Explained
Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemicals found in the cannabis plant. You might have heard of CBD and THC. While they are the often the most well-known, they are just two types of over 100 other cannabinoids that exist in the cannabis plant.Cannabinoids can also be found naturally in the body. These particular types of cannabinoids are part of the endocannabinoid system and act as messengers sending signals to the brain, gut or other parts to help regulate basic bodily functions.
Much of the conversation and research on uses and effects of the cannabis plant focuses on CBD and THC exclusively – so it’s important to know the difference.
The difference between CBD/THC
As noted, CBD and THC are both naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. While they both affect the body by communicating with the endocannabinoid system, they each play different roles.THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive chemical responsible for making you stoned or high. CBD is non-psychoactive is responsible for more calming, relaxed feelings and, when acting with THC, can counter some of those effects.

Structure of Molecule
The CBD molecule is lipid molecule - insoluble in water but soluble in certain organic solvents like pentane or hexane. The molecular structure impacts how it is best extracted and how it is most effectively delivered, since the shape and nature of the molecule allows it to easily move through the skin and pass into the mucosal membranes.Your body can, therefore, absorb it without ever needing it to enter the gastrointestinal tract or to be digested.

THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU HAD

If you've ever taken biology, you've probably learned about a few major systems in the body — the nervous system, digestive system, endocrine system, immune system — to name a few. But you most likely never had a pop quiz on the Endocannabinoid system. Learn more about this relatively recent discovery in the human body and why it matters to you.

CBD & the Body
Endocannabinoid System and You
Cannabinoids are not only found in the cannabis plant–they're also naturally occurring chemicals found in the body. The cannabinoids created in the body are part of the endocannabinoid system, and they act as messengers sending signals to the brain, gut or other parts of the body to help regulate basic bodily functions. When you ingest cannabinoids they affect the body talking to the Endocannabinoid system.

How Does It Work?
With two primary receptors, the endocannabinoid system is vital to our sense of wellbeing. CB1 receptors are found throughout the brain and peripheral central nervous system. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, can be found primarily in the immune system and gut. Although recent research indicates that these receptors may also be in the brain.
The endocannabinoid system is still a relatively recent discovery in the vast timeline of understanding human biology. A lot is unknown but ongoing research has discovered Endocannabinoids and the receptors they bind to exist throughout the body in the nervous system, glands, immune cells, stomach, organs, the brain and connective tissues.
Benefits and Beyond
Researchers, scientists and medical professionals are all working to validate the legitimate benefits of CBD in its various forms and delivery methods. While we wait for the results we suggest our customers do their own research.

Plant extraction techniques

matter more than you think.

WHY WE CHOOSE THE METHODS WE DO

Although CBD is naturally abundant in the hemp plant, extracting it from the plant in quantities high enough to experience hemp’s benefits is a bit of a process. There are three main types of hemp extraction - Steam Distillation, Solvent Extraction and Carbon Dioxide or CO2 Extraction. While each process has its benefits and drawbacks, we always choose the cleanest, highest quality extraction methods – predominantly CO2 extraction. This method creates the highest quality hemp extract, with a process that's also safer and better for the environment.

How It's Made
Full Spectrum
A full-spectrum extract means it contains all the phytochemicals naturally found in the plant. That includes CBD, trace cannabinoids, terpenes and essential oils. These extracts come with THC levels below 0.01% In this type of hemp extract, the full-spectrum of active compounds can work together to enhance or amplify the benefits of individual cannabinoids.
Full spectrum hemp is the base for the majority of our products. Looking to get all the benefits from full-spectrum CBD? Then click SHOP to discover more.
Broad Spectrum
Broad-spectrum CBD contains cannabidiol and the other compounds within the plant. However, the small amount of THC is removed after the extraction.Like full-spectrum CBD, Broad spectrum CBD contains all the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids found in the hemp plant that create the Entourage Effect, but without any THC. Broad-spectrum products are a great option for those who cannot have any traces of THC in their system.
CBD Isolate
CBD isolate is the furthest down the funnel in the CBD extraction process. Isolate is created by extracting the compound from its natural environment and removing all other ingredients. While noted as the purest and highest concentration of CBD, that does not mean it is the most effective. Because of its pure nature, CBD isolate lacks the entourage of benefits from terpenes and flavonoids that can be found in full- and broad-spectrum extracts.
At Elixinol all our ingestible products are made from full-spectrum extracts, so you can enjoy all the benefits the wonderous hemp plant has to offer.

Frequently asked questions

How does CBD work in the body? CBD works in the body by activating receptors in the brain and nervous system the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It affects different receptors to THC and affects many receptors which are responsible for the regulation of many parts of the bodys systems. How long does it take for CBD to take effect? At the right dosage, it typically takes between 20 and 30 minutes for the CBD effects to be noticeable. As CBD has no psychoactive component, there is no high. You may experience a reduction in pain, reduced tremor, a sense of calm. It does depend on why you are taking CBD oil and whether you are taking enough to combat the symptoms you have and whether CBD has an effect on you.
How is CBD extracted from hemp? CBD can extracted from hemp using a number of methods. Elixinol uses a completely organic plant and extracts CBD and a full spectrum of other cannabinoids using a specialized CO2 extraction process. Other CBD suppliers use chemical extraction which leaves behind other essential cannabinoids which we believe reduces the effectiveness of CBD. What is the endocannabinoid system? The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors found in the brain of mammals. It is present throughout the CNS and peripheral nervous system. The ECS is composed of neuromodulatory lipids and many endocannabinoid receptors which regulate many mechanisms within the body. The Endocannabinoid system receptors are specifically receptive to cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.
What are the side-effects of CBD? CBD side effects are almost negligible. They are certainly nowhere near the often scary side-effects lists that are seen in many FDA approved pharmaceutical products! Please read this article on the side effects of CBD. Perhaps a little stomach discomfort for those on high doses and some very low-level sedative effects. In a similar way that using a drop of Lavender oil on your skin might relaxes you. CBD produces no psychoactive effect so there is no high or particular concern about your ability to function normally. Is it possible to overdose on CBD? No CBD in high dosages may incur mood or anxiety swings but it will not be lethal.
